Same-Day Crowns

Computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) have become an increasingly popular part of dentistry over the past 25 years. The technology, which is used in both the dental laboratory and the dental office, uses laser scanning technology to capture and create 3D interactive images upon which dental restorations can be designed. CAD/CAM technology is used to create inlays, onlays, veneers, crowns, bridges, implant abutments, and even for full-mouth reconstruction. CAD/CAM is also being used in orthodontics.

The real appeal of the CAD/CAM concept is that it offers dentists and their patients the convenience of same-day dentistry. It is now possible for patients to present with a condition requiring treatment, have their tooth prepared and digitally scanned, and have a final restoration seated in the same day. Not only does this technology offer the convenience of same day dentistry, but because the large trays and runny impression material used in traditional dental impressions are no longer required to start the process of crown fabrication, the experience of CAD/CAM dentistry can be significantly more enjoyable. Some people struggle with sensitivity and discomfort around the temporary restorations used when crowns are fabricated in a traditional manner. When the final crown can be designed, fabricated and inserted the same day the tooth is prepared, the need for a temporary crown is eliminated.

Southport Dental Care is proud to feature the E4D CAD/CAM system for same-day dental designs. The NEVO intraoral scanner that E4D created is innovative, technologically advanced and ultra-fast. Enhancements to the design software and the milling technology itself allow E4D users to create restorations with incredible accuracy and anatomy.

It is now possible to fabricate restorations from the latest metal-free materials offered by 3M ESPE® and Ivoclar Vivadent® with micron-precise accuracy.

Benefits of Same-Day Crowns

  • Convenience – if you break a tooth and are headed out of town, don’t worry…a new crown can be made while you wait.
  • Accuracy – micron-precise accuracy means a crown will fit intimately against the tooth. A more accurately fitting crown means a longer lasting crown.
  • Higher Bond Strengths – when a crown is bonded onto freshly cut tooth material the strengths achieved are higher.
  • Less discomfort – NEVO scan technology eliminates the need for traditional dental moulds and the subsequent gagging and claustrophobia that can be caused by traditional dental impression techniques
  • Fewer needles – because a CAD/CAM restoration is fabricated while you wait, there is no need to be reinjected weeks later for a second crown insertion appointment.
  • Fewer follow-up visits – The advanced design software from E4D allows our chair side dental designers to fabricate crowns that not only fit more accurately at the tooth-crown interface than older CAD/CAM machines, but also fit accurately against the opposing tooth. This means fewer post-operative bite adjustments and less time spent adjusting the bite after the crown is bonded.
