Pre-Operative Nitrous Oxide Sedation Instructions

Pre-Operative Nitrous Oxide Sedation Instructions

    1. To reduce the chances of nausea, do not eat anything for at least six hours prior to your appointment. Clear liquids (juice/water) can be consumed up to three hours pre-operatively:
        • If your appointment is early in the morning, do not eat anything between bedtime and your scheduled appointment.
        • If your appointment is in the early afternoon, be sure to eat a light but nutritious breakfast.
    2. Unless specified by your dentist, all medicines taken on a routine basis should be continued without interruption.
    3. You will be monitored throughout the procedure.   Pt should wear loose fitting tops where the sleeves can be rolled to the shoulder.
    4. You will be able to drive yourself home afterwards.  There is typically no residual effect.
    5. Minors (under 18) must be accompanied by a parent of legal guardian.
    6. On rare occasions, a small percentage of the population are non-responders to Nitrous Oxide sedation.  In these circumstances, your appointment will need to be re-scheduled and an alternative form of sedation will need to be considered.  You will still incur charges for time during which Nitrous Oxide sedation was being utilized even though it may  not be effective on you.

Failure to follow these instructions will result in cancellation of the sedation appointment.
